Waselenchuck makes over 30 Saves in Win over UCO

Beavers Shut Out Bronchos 5-0

Waselenchuk records third straight shutout in win over University of Central Oklahoma

Minot N.D. — The Minot State University Beavers overcame a sloppy start and goaltender Wyatt Waselenchuk continued his solid play in a 5-0 victory over the University of Central Oklahoma Broncho’s Friday night.

Waselenchuk stopped over 30 shots to record his third straight shutout on home ice, helping the Beavers withstand a jittery start that included multiple turnovers breaking out of their own zone. Both teams took some time to feel each other out early, until some tenacious offensive work from the line of Jared McIntosh, Logan Herauf, and Michael Jordan put the Beavers on the board first several minutes into the first frame.

McIntosh and Jordan took care of the dirty work behind the Broncho’s net, out muscling UCO defenders and giving Herauf time to get free by the right hashmark. Herauf made no mistake on his shot, sniping bar down over the glove shoulder of Broncho goalie Tory Caldwell.

The Beavers added to their lead five minutes later. After Jeremy Johnson drew a penalty by having his stick hacked in half after some crafty offensive zone possession, Michael Jordan made the Bronchos pay on the ensuing powerplay by ripping a goal past Caldwell. Jared McIntosh drew his second assist on the tally.

UCO’s best chance of the period came late, with Ryan Marrs coming in off the right side on a 2-on-1 opportunity. A great defensive dive by Beaver defensemen Mitch Peeke, however, prevented a scoring chance from developing and kept the game at 2-0 heading into the second period.

After an early powerplay chance gave Minot State momentum early in the second, Cole Olson was able to slide one in from a tricky angle five minutes in for a 3-0 lead. Jeremy Johnson got in on the fun a mere 45 seconds later, ripping one home from the slot to give the Beavers a comfortable 4-0 advantage.

The Beavers went into shutdown mode for much of the third period, but the Beavers did record a fifth tally off the stick of Herauf. Once again it was Michael Jordan who provided a filthy feed from behind the net, this time with Herauf banging home a perfect saucer pass through the glove side of Caldwell.

The Beavers will now prepare for one of the most hotly anticipated games of the season, as they will raise the 2012-13 National Championship Banner to the Maysa Arena rafters tonight. The special pre-game ceremony will feature numerous alumni from throughout the entire history of the program. Be sure to get to the Maysa Arena early to secure your seat for this historic event. Puck drop versus the Bronchos is 7:30 p.m.
